There are also many myths about the causes of acne and how to treat it. Here we have gathered together some of the popular home remedies that have been shown to help treat acne and also debunk some of the myths surrounding this painful and embarrassing condition.

Acne Myths

No 1 – eating chocolate causes acne.

There is no evidence that chocolate is a cause of acne or that it makes the condition worse. In fact studies have shown that there is no correlation at all between eating chocolate and outbreaks of acne. So you can go ahead and eat chocolate, in moderation of course, without affecting your acne.

No 2 – eating greasy foods causes acne

Although eating greasy foods is not good for you and should be kept to a minimum they will not make your acne worse. The fat in greasy foods is not going to cause your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum.

Myth no 3 – dirt is a cause of acne.

Acne is caused by fluctuating hormones which cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. Vigorous washing and scrubbing to remove dirt will lead to more irritation of the skin and make the condition worse.

Myth no 4 – acne should be left alone until you 'grow out of it'

In most cases the acne will clear up as hormone levels stabilise in the early twenties. Occasionally it lasts into the thirties or even longer. Leaving acne untreated can cause enormous distress and pain and lead to permanent scarring.

Myth no 5 – stress is a cause of acne

There is no evidence at all that stress causes acne. It can however make an existing condition worse. Some medications prescribed for the relief of stress can also make the condition worse.

Green tea has been used as a natural home remedy to cure acne for centuries. Green tea is famous for its health benefits and has been popular in China for a very long time to treat a wide variety of health problems. It is high in a compound named epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is an antioxidant. Many studies have shown that it will inhibit cancer cells and green tea has also proved to be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, infections and in reducing blood cholesterol levels.

Many studies have shown that EGCG as well as acting as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent also helps to improve swelling on the skin that often occurs with acne. In a trial the American Academy of Dermatology applied a 1% concentration of EGCG in a cream which, when applied to the skin improved the acne as much as, and sometimes better than, a solution benzoyl peroxide. Also the EGCG gel did not cause drying out of the skin which is a usual problem with using benzoyl peroxide or some other chemical treatments for acne.

Gels and creams can be bought containing green tea or you could easily make one in your kitchen. Take some green tea, add to some water and boil, then apply the cooled down solution to affected areas. Also you can drink green tea which will allow the nutrients to perform their work from within. Drink at least 2 cups each and use the solution containing green tea to your skin three times a day. In a few weeks you should notice an improvement in your acne and you definitely will have a healthier skin.

There are plenty of uses of green tea for both losing weight and health and treatment of acne is only one of them. As with all acne home remedies you should combine this treatment with a healthier lifestyle including drinking plenty every day and making sure you have a vitamin and mineral rich diet. Do not give up if your acne does not clear immediately as with many natural remedies for acne it will not work over night.
